MacOS Universal Build - Call for testing

TP

Hi!

Marius has put in quite some work to get the MacOS version
ready as universal build for both Intel and M1 system.

It would be great if that could get some wider testing on
both platforms so it can be published with confidence:

See the github issue for the download link:
https://github.com/openscad/openscad/issues/4036

ciao,
Torsten.

A quick run over 3 of my more complex models shows that F5 and F6 readers are typically half that of Rosetta with the latest MC build with no problems.

I will keep using it and report any problems I run into.
thanks

Thank you Marius!

I’m getting repeated requests to give OpenSCAD access to the Documents folder. Normally this happens only once, but now it happens every time I start OpenSCAD and tell it to open an recent file. The dialog even pops up more than once. Normally you see this once and then everything is taken care of after that. It’s possible that my Mac is just confused.

I’m glad it’s not just me. I haven’t seen this before either with the Intel release or with the Apple Silicon version that I built myself. Something is confusing MacOS.

I normally have multiple releases of OpenScad in my App folder and I have not seen this behaviour when switching between those - they obviously share some things as they will always offer me recent files that have been opened by a different version.

I wondered if it was the M1 & Rosetta pairing confusing the OS

So I deleted the M1 version out of Apps and then 211020 asked for permission the first time but not the second - back to normal.

Delete all my Rosetta versions and reinstate the M1 version on its own and it gets stuck in the permissions loop.

So not sure if that helps, but it is all grist for the mill….

Cheers

There is something about the universal version that is confusing MacOS. I have an inkling of what it might be, but I’m not capable of explaining it. The combination of M1 and Intel binaries should not be a problem. Lot’s of applications are set up that way. I got the same behavior you did when switching to a different version but with my homemade M1 version instead of the Intel binary. The universal binary asks permission every time it wants to access a file. When I go back to the M1-only version, it asks once and never again. If my inkling is correct, then this should be an easy fix.

I also have the same issue of repeated requests for folder access. Any chance,  on Mac, of adding a preference for where the library folder
search path? So it would be stored like other preferences of the app in the
existing  ~/Library/Preferences/org.openscad.OpenSCAD.plist

This issue of repeated requests for folder access would vanish if OpenSCAD
looked in ~/Library/Application Support/OpenSCAD/library which is where a
Mac application should be putting its libraries.

And since Macs don't provide an easy way to set environment variables, the
suggested way of changing OPENSCADPATH (the list of paths) given in
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenSCAD_User_Manual/Libraries
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenSCAD_User_Manual/Libraries
hasn't
worked in years. (Reference:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/25385934/setting-environment-variables-via-launchd-conf-no-longer-works-in-os-x-yosemite
)

So, change the location, change the documentation, and document the change
in the release notes.
