Export colored .3mf file to Bambu Studio

The latest release (2.5) of Bambu Studio supports importing color information in a .3mf file. I am using OpenSCAD 2025.12.21 on a Mac. It supports color in .3mf files. If I create a .3mf file with color, export the .3mf file to disk, open Bambu Studio and import the .3mf file, the color information is preserved. However, if I use the 3d Print button in the toolbar, Bambu Studio loads the model, but with no color information. I’m using the “Local Application” option and have the parameters set to just the file name. I tried a couple of the other command line options, but didn’t get color working,

Did you check what happens if you import the file that's generated via
the 3D Print button into a separate Bambu Studio instance works with
colors? If that's the case, the question would need to go to Bambu.

ciao,
Torsten.

when bbs came out, it had it's own file structure, which they named
.3mf, but it was not compliant. There were two places where 3mf could be
saved/loaded, one was OKish. They do their own thing.Not sure what they
are up to, currently.

Torsten,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I used the 3d print button in OpenSCAD and then closed Bambu Studio, re-opened it in imported the file that was created with the 3d print  button. The model opened without color information.

I then looked inside the .3mf files. Inside both there is a 3D folder. In that folder is a file 3dmodel.model.

These are XML file. Near the top is a <resources> group that has color information.

In the file created by the 3mf button, the one that opens in Bambu Studio with color it looks like this:

<resources>
	<m:colorgroup id="1">
		<m:color color="#F9D72CFF"/>
		<m:color color="#FFFFFFFF"/>
		<m:color color="#C12E1FFF"/>
		<m:color color="#0A2989FF"/>
	</m:colorgroup>

Inside the one created by the 3d print button that doesn’t open in color, it looks like this:

<resources>
	<basematerials id="1">
		<base name="Default" displaycolor="#F9D72CFF"/>
		<base name="Color 1" displaycolor="#FFFFFFFF"/>
		<base name="Color 2" displaycolor="#C12E1FFF"/>
		<base name="Color 3" displaycolor="#0A2989FF"/>
	</basematerials>

So it appears that OpenSCAD generates the files differently (m:colorgroup vs base materials).  The hex color codes for colors 1,2 and 3 correspond to hex codes that I used in the OpenSCAD model. #FFFFFFFF is pure white and matches Bambu Lab Jade White filament. #C12E1FFFF is the shade of red the that matches the Bambu Lab Red filament. #0A2989FF matches the Bambu Lab Blue filament.

I don’t recognize the Default color and Bambu Studio only brings in the three colors.

Does that help?

Mark

Yes, OpenSCAD supports both basematerial and color which can
be set in the export dialog (short cut to force the dialog to
show: SHIFT + click toolbar button).

So this sounds like the 3d-print toolbar button forgets to
configure the export with the currently active settings.

ciao,
Torsten.

This would be a great help to me- but I tried it just now and Bambu Studio says "The 3mf is not from Bambu Lab; load geometry only"

Is there something I need to configure somewhere?
