Researching 'add fillets in OpenSCAD' one post reported that FreeCAD can do so
much more easily. I want to test that, before attempting to use it on the
replacement control knob I posted about earlier.
I downloaded and installed FreeCAD. I exported a cube from OpenSCAD as a CSG and
imported it into FreeCAD. But as a complete FreeCAD beginner I was lost at the
first hurdle because the model then started zooming in, and nothing I did would
stop it. I'm discussing in the FreeCAD forum, but so far no solution.
Has anyone here successfully done this please? Does OpenSCAD export reliably?
FWIW here are the screenshots and video I posted to the FreeCAD forum:

Hi Terry,
save the file as 'cube.scad', or whatever, as a normal openscad file. In
freecad open that file. I couldn't see your video, so no idea what that
was about.
There is an openscad workbench in freecad, which you may or may not want
to use use.
Best wishes,
Ray

Hi Ray,
Thanks. Just tried that. But as soon as I try clicking that I get same
behaviour.
Puzzled why you couldn't see my video? It plays OK here with a double click, or
Right Click > Launch.

Do you have FreeCAD? If so could you try it please, with either the CSG or SCAD?

I just made a single cube:
cube( [ 10,10,10] );
...exported it as csg and my FreeCAD (2021.07.17 on Ubuntu) opened it
without any problems.

Terry,
Do you have a 3D mouse attached to your system? What other pointing
devices are connected? It seems like there is a pointing device that is
commanding a slow zoom to your view. I have a 3D mouse and it can at times
introduce a slight "bias" that seems to be more pronounced with FreeCAD.
I am not very experienced with FreeCAD, so I don't know if there are any
"tweaks" that it might have available to the pointing device that might
need to be, er, tweaked.
I will say that FreeCAD can be a real PITA when first starting out. I use
it mostly to convert STL to STEP and it took a bit of hair pulling to
figure out the magic steps needed to accomplish that. I recently also used
it to export a dxf projection of an STL. I've not used it for anything
more than that as yet. If you can learn it, it seems to be able to
accomplish tasks well enough.
I'll poke around in it here in a bit to see if anything jumps out about the
pointing/zooming devices.

Try "shift-F" to see if that freezes the view. This isn't a fix, but could
be a band-aid.

Hi Terry,
Before my previous reply, I made a cube in openscad, saved is as an
scad, opened it in freecad, and it was fine, just as I said. I have not
used freecad for some time so did not bother dong anything to the cube,
but it was on screen and was in the tree view. I did not like the
freecad interface, and other things, but it was handy for filleting, and
messing with stl's.
If it is merely a case that you want to use it for your cooker knob?
then if a one off, being a pragmatist, I'd round the corners with a bit
of sandpaper 😅.
Best wishes,
Ray

Do you have FreeCAD? If so could you try it please, with either the CSG or SCAD?

There is an openscad workbench in freecad, which you may or may not want
to use use.

Bingo! You're a star, thank you ;-)
I haven't yet fixed the problem. But yes, you've definitely identified the
cause. I have a 3D Connexion 'Space Navigator', which I use only with Google
Earth, and haven't done that for many months. It was connected yet not powered
on (no blue LED lights around its base). Nor did Win 10 Task Mgr show it as a
Process. But there was an active Service called 'Mgl3DCtlrRPCService', display
name '3Dconnexion Broker Service', described as ""Manages 3D mouse controller
communication protocols". I stopped it - but when I tried the Space Navigator it
was still allowing me to move/zoom/rotate the cube.
So I have at last SEEN my cube in 3D form! I'll now unplug the navigator and
hopefully be able to do so with the regular keyboard methods, whatever they are.
And then turn to my actual simple objective: add a fillet or two to it.
I'll shortly also let the FreeCAD thread know of this obscure cause. Please let
me know of anything else you discover.

I'd tried that early on but no joy. Nothing freezes it!

Yes, tried that on a surplus print and looks awful. The black PLA becomes
whitish. No way I'm going to into painting!
Did you work out why the video didn't work?
I expect you'll have seen the identification of the cause of this unwanted
movement. But I haven't yet been able to stop it.
