I tried holding down the ctrl key while clicking on OpenSCAD but that
still fails for me in exactly the same way as double clicking on the
application. I'd be happy to donate $100.00 so you can join the
developer program.

Sorry… I was probably was incorrect… I do things so automatically at times I forget the sequence.
I think it’s, hold down the control key, left-click (or secondary click) on OpenSCAD… select “Open”… when the dialog comes up complaining that it doesn’t conform properly, click “Open” anyway.
I’m pretty sure that’s the sequence.
Let me know if it doesn’t work.

Yeah, the $100 annual Apple fee is an inconvenience, which we'll probably have to extend to other platforms as well.
Apart from the fee, there's some automation work to do, as binaries are built on the CI. For macOS, we currently only build nightlies there, but that will hopefully change eventually.
I'm dreaming of cross-platform standardization in this domain, but that's probably not gonna happen : (

I plugged a physical mouse into my MacBook and it does not matter
which mouse button I use, I always get a dialog that says:
"OpenSCAD.app' can't be opened because it's integrity cannot be
verified.
This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more
information.
Firefox downloaded this file on July 15, 2019
It shows two buttons with "Move to Trash" and "Cancel"
Maybe it worked for you because you compiled the app on your own machine?

You might need to change
System Preferences -> Security & Privacy, "Allow apps downloaded from".

To check things over I did a new install of virtual box, Catalina and OpenSCAD from the current binary on the website to my iMac and successfully launched the openscad app.
The only thing I can think of at this point is that I have the developer Catalina beta and I presume you have the open beta.
Has anyone had any success running openscad on a virtual box Catalina partition? I’m away from my computer for a few days but when I return and if this issue isn’t resolved I’ll download the public beta and see if I encounter problems.
Whether you are using a plug in mouse or trackpad should be immaterial.... as stated, all you should need to do is hold down the control key, secondary click on the OpenSCAD app... a menu should appear and you should primary click on”open” That should reveal the dialog you mention... but there should be a third option of “open”... it’s the use of the control key the makes the third option appear.

I had already selected "Allow apps downloaded from anywhere" in Security
and Privacy.

Now I think that this is a Catalina bug. I filed a bug with Apple and
they are investigating why it does not work on my machine. I'll let you
know if it is resolved.

I just installed the latest beta of Catalina.
10.15 Beta (19A526h)
Works fine now.

I am trying to install on 10.15.2 with no luck. Besides @boxcarmib
suggestion, can someone detail how to install? Ctrl open does not bring up
an open anyway dialog box for me.
