This sounds like standard “first run” protocol. Apps not built with Developer
Connection details at compiletime are considered “unknown”. When you get one
of these on a new software, click the cancel button, go to Apple/System
Preferences, choose System Security pane and look for a message like “You
attempted to open OpenSCAD but it is unknown, then click the “Open Anyway”
button. It should now run. You should only have to do this once per app
unless you uninstall then reinstall it.
Regarding the $100 Developer Connection membership discussed in other
replies, I live and die by OpenSCAD and, if admins were to setup a Patreon
or PayPal acct to fund this from donations I am more than happy to chuck
AU$10 into the pot for an OpenSCAD developers membership. This gives a few
more advantages than just getting “first run recognition” by Apple, you get
access to a community of Mac experts to help with problems like these and
even trickier ones, like the transition to Apple Silicon, their new
proprietory ARM architecture. An issue that is very important to me as my
new Mac shipping soon is an M1 AppleSilicon chip. The Rosetta 2 emulator
won’t be supported for long after Apple discontinues its last Intel model in
2 years.

Let us know how that works out. I have an aging mac that I'm looking to
upgrade too, but if there are serious issues on the new processors, I'll
have to wait until that's sorted out, because I need to have OpenSCAD
working.

My M1 Air should be here in 2 weeks. From what I’ve read, Rosetta 2 should
handle it nicely, but it remains to be seen just how much of that raw, 8
cores of blistering power is swallowed whole by emulation.
