Jon raised an issue https://github.com/openscad/openscad/issues/6277
Expected behavior
Once I tell OpenSCAD where I want to save files, it would be nice if OpenSCAD helped me, by
remembering the location, rather than forcing me to specify that location repeatedly
I suggested
I suspect others will not like such behaviour, I for example have a working directory that I want
to stay at, and wouldn't want it to change if I happened to save something elsewhere. I set the
directory in a shortcut (on the Desktop) which starts OpenSCAD.exe.
Jon rejoined
As I said in my comment, this has been discussed at length in the past, and no single option has
made everyone happy. But the current behavior is not as it was in the past. Hence my "bug" report.
I would welcome two behaviors (or more?!?) controlled by a Preference. It should be possible to
make almost everyone happier.
Dare I suggest that we hash this out on the main list?
'But the current behavior is not as it was in the past. Hence my "bug" report.'
I am reporting this as a bug because the current program behavior differs from the program behavior
in the past.
However, Jon was not particularly clear about what the past behaviour was, and with which version.
This needs clarification.
So, open for hashing out on the Mailing-list!
(Of note is, do we really need yet another option, when Operating System solutions exist to tell
OpenSCAD where you want to have the working directory)
...GO...
(p.s. Yet another 'religious' discussion, there are well fortified positions on all three sides,
keep discussion civil)
Perhaps the best way to think about this would be
Jon made a specific proposal
if that proposal does not work for you, make a different specific
proposal
After we have 2 or 3 or 4 proposals, we try to define modes for this,
and then possible preferences. Once your preference is set on your
system, then everyone will be happy.

I would like to have a tab or page in preferences where i have control over where my own files are, where libraries are, and so on
personal start points - list of folders that i create manually. The folders on the list can be ordered and one marked as the current place for new files to be saved
a list of paths in the environment : exported files .. platform specific folders included
with a checkbox to show which location is the current folder for saving new files
[ ] $HOME /Users/vulcan/3D-designs
[ x ] $XPC_folder /mnt/Spare/scad-designs
[ ] $SCAD_DEFAULT_FOLDER (do we have this?)
list of folders where libraries might be - one from the app’s installation directory, another for an optional nightly
with a checkbox to select which ones should be used
[ ] $HOME /Users/vulcan/scad-libs
[ ] SCAD Nightly libraries
[ ] SCAD libraries
I will mock up a popup or preferences page to show all this

Please resist playing with library location look-up, some people have complex setups.
It needs a clear understanding of the various library settings. Search Help/Library_Info for 'path'.
The other consideration, is how the 'current' path relates when you have multiple tabs.
Do you really want paths for other tabs affected by a save you do in one tab?
As I mentioned, the breadth of the preferences has exploded, one can have too many.
I'm still in the No change camp.
Jon, you still have not explained "But the current behavior is not as it was in the past.".
What past version, and how is the behaviour different?

In the past, once I opened a file or saved a file, the appropriate
folder was remembered until I terminated OpenSCAD. Since I never re-boot
my computer, this means that it worked fine for weeks at a time.
I just tried it one more time, and I find that it is working fine: it
remembers both the open file folder and the STL folder.
I am now puzzled as to how I imagined that there was a problem. I know
it bit me repeatedly over the last few weeks.
I will try to reproduce.
At this point, my "bug report" may well be an error on my part.

Not sure if it is related or not, but recently the windows 64 bit nightly builds are no longer saving the window positions I set.
When I updated to 2025.09.20 nightly build, I set the editor, console & viewport windows to exactly where I wanted them and the sizes I wanted across my 3 monitors & then shut down the program. When I brought it up again, it had forgotten the settings and had all three windows jammed together on one monitor.
I eventually found a work-around is to install version 2012-01, then run that & set the window positions. Then I shut that version down & run 2025.09.20, and it then "remembers" where 2012-01put the editor & console- but not the viewport- it always puts the viewport on monitor 1 instead of 3 - not my preferred option, but I can live with that .
After that little work-around, the nightly build will now remember my window positions.
I also just checked by installing 2025.10.13 nightly build and it also picked up the my preferred window positions straight away.
Oh, and it also remembers the last folder used when opening or saving a file..

That remembering where you saved something only happens when you
successfully save a file. So if you navigate to the destination
directory, remember you need to change one more thing, hit cancel,
change that thing, hit save again, you're back to where you started.

i don’t intend to “play with” anything. My proposal is to bring the mysteries of where OpenSCAD looks for stuff into the light .. an information page in Preferences will do that.
I have three places where I want to store .scad files so i would like to “register” them as a list of Known Places (in preferences ? maybe) and i think i can make that list appear in the Save dialog box as a list of favourite places.
Then it would make sense to put “the folder last saved to” to the top of that list of favourites .. and maybe “folder of last save” should be kept separately for each type of file we Export .. that would be nice eh?
The other consideration, is how the 'current' path relates when you have multiple tabs.
no change needed here .. each Editor Tab is an instance of the Scintilla editor and as such remembers the folder its content was loaded from, which doing Save As can change but that Save A Copy will not change. I am not proposing to change this existing, built-in functionality.
As I mentioned, the breadth of the preferences has exploded, one can have too many.
Or possibly just the right amount. One of Pet Peeves on my list of Things Done Badly By Most Apps is them NOT showing where references (libraries) are looked for and another is them NOT showing how they are using environmental variables to form file paths for those reference locations.
I would like to improve that for OpenSCAD

The library path is not all that prominent, but it's in Help/Library
Info. The per-user library path is directly accessible via File/Show
Library Folder.

In Windows, the Open dialog already has a system-wide favorite-places
mechanism.
I could not find this mechanism, Jordan.
