Re: openscad stopped working on Centos7

Hi!

There's a long list, but it's difficult to tell if all
those would apply and actually work:

  • Upgrade the Linux Kernel

This one I tested in a VM and it worked. I got the same
error about the library not found in that VM while still
running the default 3.x kernel. After Upgrading to latest
mainline kernel 5.12, the OpenSCAD Snap runs fine.

  • AppImage probably will not work with CentOS7 being based
    on ancient libs

  • Flatpak might be an option, supposedly it's installed on
    CentOS7 by default

  • Compile from source, as some of the libraries seem to be
missing in the default CentOS package source, that could
be a bit more than just compiling OpenSCAD itself

  • Upgrade to CentOS8, I don't know if that would make a
difference, but it might allow the AppImage to run and
bring a new kernel to make things work

ciao,
Torsten.

Thanks for the quick response  and the great suggestions.
I removed the snap version and installed the stable version from flathub.

I am back in business!
Version from Flatpak is OpenSCAD https://www.openscad.org/ version
2021.01

I am wondering if I actually started my OpenScad journey with the
Flatpak version originally.

Still curious about why the snap version doesn't work but relieved that
I can get back to designing things.

As a programmer, I find the OpenScad way of doing design to be very easy.
I am sure that I have a lot to learn.
The group is very helpful.

I am running Linux 3.10.0-1160.25.1.el7.x86_64 on x86_64

I am not sure that I am ready to move to Centos 8.

The relationship between RedHat, Fedora and Centos seem to be in a state
of flux with Centos going from a slightly behind version of RedHat which
was pretty stable to something more like a testbed for RedHat - a Fedora
light?

I have moved through the versions of Centos for the past 20 years but am
rethinking my choice of OS.

I am also looking at changing the hardware to ARM (Raspberry Pis) both
for servers and workstations so that seems to require a rethink of the
Linux architecture.
