Please don’t move this mailing list to either Google or Facebook. Sometimes, it’s just best to leave good enough alone and use reliable tech like this.
There's no real risk of moving away from e-mail. This question comes up
once or twice a year, and the conclusion is always that the majority of
the users prefer e-mail.
Nobody minds if the mailing list is gatewayed to a forum, in a
high-quality way that does not adversely affect the mailing list.
Beyond that, I think that the attitude is generally that this is an
e-mail community and that there are forum-style communities that one can
join if one prefers that style.

I think the point is that Google Groups provides a high quality mailing list experience that is also gatewayed to a forum. It seems to be the only free solution out there that meets this requirement. I've been running a Google group for many years and have no complaints about the tech or the user experience.
I was hoping you had a forum with the info of the mailing list, but as a
forum, exactly as used to be the case I believe, and as Google groups
allows.
Maybe you're right and the time when this could be done for free has gone.

Those 2 look dead for years? At least when opening without

No idea, but if somebody wanted a Facebook-based community it would be
better to start with something that exists than to create yet another.
If I click on Community I at least see posts from 2020.
