I would like editor screen displayed on the left hand half of the screen. I
would like on the right half the preview screen,with the console screen
below.

When I open openscad, I get three horizontal screens, editor, preview,
console. Although I can change the widths of these bands and un-display any
of these screens, I don't know how to move the screens around to meet my
requirements as in the above paragraph.

I would be grateful for any help on this matter.

Check the preferences, you need to have the following option
enabled:

Edit->Preferences->Advanced->Enable docking of Editor and Console
in different places

After it's enabled, both Editor and Console should have a small
title bar with which they can be dragged into other positions.

thanks for that tp3. The query was nor really about openSCAD, rather the
basic way way much software enables the screen to be laid out, and that was
the reason I could not find it in help opensCAD! As soon as I had one
quarter read you response, I remembered what I had to do - drag the title
bar.
