For long F6 runs, I usually minimize OpenSCAD and check on it
periodically. If OpenSCAD were to pop up a "Completed!" message box,
either when minimized or when the calculations too more than (say) 5
seconds, I could then see it in the task bar and act on that information
immediately.

GNU Handbrake (AKA GHB), a video format conversion program uses a system
tray progress doodad for this purpose and I find it both unobtrusive and
useful. Perhaps the inspiration could be borrowed.
