Repair Large STL

TO
Trevor Orr
Mon, Nov 11, 2024 9:21 PM

I downloaded a large STL file that is 565MB and I need to repair it but I am unable to because it is so large.  I have tried about 5 different apps but not of them will even load the file because it is so big.  The only one that will load it is Windows 3D Builder but it craps out during the repair process.  I have tried Blender, Bambu, MeshMixer, Cura and 3D Builder.
Any ideas how to repair a large STL like that?

You might need more RAM. Just a guess.

RAM is not the problem, since 500MB is half a GB, and most of us have
16GB or 32GB

You might try simplifying the STL before you attempt to repair it.

PrusaSlicer has built-in facilities for those things

Good luck

You can try 'polyfix', installed with 'angelcad'

https://github.com/arnholm/angelcad/releases

It is a console application written to repair large models, but as
always the success rate depends on the type of problems in the model.

Hi Trevor,

Are you sure the STL is broken? I was convinced that lots of
downloadable STLs were broken because OpenScad (and the community
here) told me that was often the case with downloaded STLs.

Then I was told to switch to "manifold" and all of a sudden, lots of
previously broken STLs were no longer considered broken!

Roger.

The difference in Manifold and CGAL rendering and is most likely the
reason that some folk were getting errors with my Hirth joint script,
and probably the source of other 'disputes' on here.

It is a console application written to repair large models, but as always
the success rate depends on the type of problems in the model.

I downloaded a large STL file that is 565MB and I need to repair it but
I am unable to because it is so large.  I have tried about 5 different
apps but not of them will even load the file because it is so big.  The
only one that will load it is Windows 3D Builder but it craps out during
the repair process.  I have tried Blender, Bambu, MeshMixer, Cura and 3D
Builder.

Any ideas how to repair a large STL like that?

The difference in Manifold and CGAL rendering and is most likely the reason that some folk were getting errors with my Hirth joint script, and probably the source of other 'disputes' on here.
