Also, since I'm using Linux Mint 18.1 it's not immediatly obvious how to
get the development version working. Following the Ubuntu 16.04 (which
Linux Mint 18.1 is based on) instructions doesn't work out of the box.

I just built OpenSCAD from git master following the README on both Linux
Mint 18 and Linux Mint 18.2 without a problem. I built them inside
virt-manager qemu VMs.
If you have a problem please raise an issue at github.com/openscad/openscad
and please also copy/paste your terminal log showing the full error stream.
