So this one is by email again...

Note: we didn't move to Empathy because we wanted to.

I appreciate that there was dissatisfaction with Nabble, but I never got what the advantage of a parallel system of email and forum is. I find email a little tedious, but if that's what people want, I can live with that. As best I can tell, my Empathy account is set up correctly.

Quite likely mine is not, but it can't be changed via "update profile". So it looks like I would have to unsubscribe and resubscribe again with a correct account setup. However, I remember trying that somewhere else, and not being let back in, because the forum recognised my email address and thought I was trying to open an additional account, which is rightly frowned upon.

Er, umm, what's happened to Kwikius? Not heard from him for some time.

This forum has been very useful and I would not want to throw myself out of it.

When is a forum not a forum? When it's an Empathy.

Note: we didn't move to Empathy because we wanted to. We moved because Nabble shut down their email-to-forum gateway, and is moving to shut down their forum service.

To be clear: Like kwikius, it bothers me that my e-mail appears at the top left of my posts.

Practically everyone else has their nick/alias there. I want that too. I want to continue with my nick from the old forum.

So, how does one do that?

I experimented with that a few weeks back. As best I can tell, my Empathy account is set up correctly. If I send e-mail, it shows up in Empathy with my name, not my e-mail address. If I post from Empathy, it sends e-mail with my e-mail address and no name, and the archives have only the e-mail address.

I'm not an admin on the mailing list, so I can't look at how it's configured, but I doubt that Michael has it set up to deliberately use only the e-mail address on Empathy posts. It sure seems like it's an Empathy bug/limitation.

If one contacts the not-a-forum by e-mail, how does one quote a previous post?

If one contacts the not-a-forum by e-mail, how does one reply to a specific post?

Using standard email reply techniques, like I'm doing now. Those do imply reading via email too.

It wasn't dissatisfaction (though there was some of that).  The people
running Nabble (not the OpenSCAD people, the people running the
platform) killed their forum-to-email gateway.

Why have a parallel system with a gateway?  Because some people like
e-mail and some people like forums, and they want to talk to each
other.  (Though, to be honest, I think it's mostly that the people who
like forums want to talk to the people who like e-mail.  The people who
like forums seem to mostly be newcomers who want to ask questions, and
the people who answer those questions seem to be e-mail people.)

No, I mean that mine appears to be set up as correctly as possible, and
it still misbehaves.
