It's not phone-home, exactly. It's dynamically picking up a list of 3D
printing services. As Marius says, there's a change in the works to let
you enable/disable that. (In a quick skim, it looks like it makes it
opt-in.)
(And crypto because of course everything should be using authenticated
and encrypted connections. And I don't mean that to be the least bit
sarcastic.)
