When previewing, at what point is the view erased?

I notice when I do a preview operation, it is some time before the previous
image is erased, and then some more time before the new one is completed
and rendered.  What is the system "doing" after you start the render, but
before it erases the screen?  I'd think that it would either erase right at
the beginning or the end, but not in the middle.

Good point, I would rather it at the end so you can see the effect of the
change.

Not sure, but I’ve noticed that if you try to rotate/move the camera while it’s working on it, that seems to make it go blank immediately.
