Minor bug?

The mailing list itself has a forum style web interface,
it's a bit limited but it does work at least.

As noted earlier, it likely needs people to re-register
for the web-interface with the same mail address they
are already using.

ciao,
Torsten.

Thanks Torsten. I registered here earlier today.

One immediately obvious flaw that strikes me is that the threads don’t appear to be consolidated. Otherwise I rather like the layout.

Not an option. I was using the forum and deleted all emails at that
time.

In an ordinary mailing list, if you don't have a previous message then
you can't "post to an existing thread".  Mailing lists don't have the
persistence that forums have.

(Mailing list archives and forum-style interfaces can provide that
persistence, but those are mechanisms outside the mailing list per se.)

Nor do I know why ‘Terry’ (which I finally configured for my mailing list posts) has now been replaced in this new forum by my email address. Anyone know how to fix that please? Perhaps I missed an option during the registration procedure?

Terry,

That is not a new Forum, it is the Mailing-list archive with some fancy front end as a add-on from the Mailing-list host.

I did say it has limitations.

My test and my examination of options have shown if you post there, it uses your email.

Nothing I can do. I'll mention it to the list, but the main guy driving that passed away recently, so not holding my breath.

I'd guess your best option would be to post via Gmail's web interface.

Michael

p.s. if others want to register to post there, it is via:

The Mailing-list is configured to reply to the list by default.

The intent is to ensure discussions stay on the public record otherwise it creates gaps in a thread if people just reply to an individual.

That gets confusing, when they then reply back to the list, particularly without quoting.

You can use whatever addresses you want in Replying in your email client.

It depends on the email client I think. In gmail  mailto:discuss@lists.openscad.org discuss@lists.openscad.org  is first in the to field, so reply goes back to the list.

Reply.

More precisely, Reply All, or some mail programs have a "reply to list".

An ordinary "reply" should normally send only to the author of the
message, not to the entire mailing list.  The OpenSCAD list is bad
that way; it's set to cause "reply to sender" to go to everybody, and
that often produces embarrassing results.

Thanks for checking into it Michael. Disappointing conclusion though. So I do hope that very basic design issue can be fixed.  It looks a comprehensive archive, despite the other flaws, and just studying it will be very educational for me. But I really would also like to be able to post securely from there too.

I will look into your gmail web suggestion, although I’ve never been a gmail fan and old habits die hard.

It had already been raised as in issue on their system. But as I said, the main driver has passed away, I would not expect it to be fixed anytime soon.

We still await development on the Nabble (original Forum) side, but also not holding my breath.
