It is NOT a Forum.

The Forum (via Nabble) is DEAD, leaving an old shell, LONG LIVE The Mailing-list.

OpenSCAD has no Forum.

'It' is Empathy, a custom front end to Mailman-3, written by the hosting company.

'It' is full of bugs.

It is recommended not to use 'It".

But 'It' is a fall back should you accept it's limitations.

If you wish for your address to not appear don't post via Empathy.

Hide address. Select this option to hide your email address from showing up on membership roster.

Means your address is not visible to members of the list (on the roster), however it is in emails that members receive.

"Roster" is a term chosen by the creator of Empathy. I think it is what you get when you submit a Mailman-3 admin request, but untested by me.

I don’t like that my e-mail address appears in my posts in the forum either.

I post straight to the forum and not via e-mail.

I have ticked:

Hide address. Select this option to hide your email address from showing up on membership roster.

in my profile, but it makes no difference.

(What do they mean by membership roster and where is it? To me a roster is a list of people with days on which they have to perform a certain task in turn, usually some menial chore).

(What do they mean by membership roster and where is it? To me a
roster is a list of people with days on which they have to perform a
certain task in turn, usually some menial chore).

"Roster" in general means a list of people.  It's often used to refer to
the list of members of an organization.

Some mailing list mechanisms allow members to see a list of the members
of the mailing list.  I don't immediately see that in Empathy or its
administrative counterpart Affinity, but maybe I'm not looking in the
right place or maybe Michael Marx (the mailing list admin) has disabled it.

Or maybe we don't talk about roster-club.

I'm pretty sure Michael's comment there was meant as a joke / reference to
the movie Fight Club.

That's not to say it's in any way invalid to want a forum.
But if that's your main reason, I just don't recall any other times
discussion was attempted to be censored or anything like that.

Go for it.  There's nobody stopping you from setting one up.

You might first consider the OpenSCAD Reddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/openscad/, Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/openscad/, Thingiverse
https://www.thingiverse.com/groups/openscad, or RepRap
https://reprap.org/forum/list.php?313 communities.

But when I did a survey last year, 58% of the respondents (mostly from
this community) used only the mailing list, and only 4% used only the
forum.  (Which worked, more or less, at the time, but then the company
running the platform dropped e-mail support and is now in the process of
largely shutting down.)  81% said that if the forum went away, it
wouldn't change their participation, and only 4% said they would stop
participating entirely.  52% said that if the mailing list went away
they would participate less, and 24% said that they would stop
participating entirely.  70% said that if mailing list support was
reduced they would participate less.

The simple summary is that this is a mailing list community, with
marginal support for a forum, and it's that way because the people who
use it (and, critically, the people who volunteer to keep it running)
want a mailing list.  They don't oppose a forum, as long as it doesn't
hurt the mailing list's operation, and as long as it doesn't cost much
or take much effort to administer (or somebody else does it).  Nobody
has volunteered to find a first-rate forum infrastructure that plays
well with a mailing list, set it up, and administer it.  (Assuming, of
course, that such a thing even exists.)

Last year I skimmed through the other communities that I found.  The
busiest among them was the Reddit community, and it's several times less
active than this one.

So, not to be too harsh, but it seems like your choices are approximately:

  • Learn to live in a mailing list environment.
  • Live with the limitations of the forum-ish software that Michael
    found, set up, and administers.
  • Volunteer to find something better, and set it up, and administer it.
  • Volunteer to create your own forum somewhere, and administer it.
  • Join an existing forum-style community.

Yes, joke reference, but also to allude that it is probably not good to publicly talk about what the Roster is and how to see it. (but it is just part of all mailing lists)

Please ignore the Roster, and the setting in the Profile, it is nothing to do with the email address getting posted.

I'll comment on the wider discussion separately.

There have been very few cases where I have asked for OT topics to be curtailed. Even fewer where I had to take Administrative action. These are normally managed off-the-list.
