Depending on how you use tabs you don't want the display to change when you switch to a tab hosting include<> etc.

It would be best if it had a screen buffer for each tab, so that you can switch between them instantly and they are always in sync. I have no idea how hard that would be to implement or how resource hungry it would be.

Others have explained what's going on, but I have to agree that it feels weird to have the view pane be showing model A while the text shows model B. I'd rather that when you change tabs it clears the view pane.
But then again for most purposes I prefer multiple windows, and I'm still kind of annoyed that Ctrl+N got changed from "new window" to "new tab".

Yes, all my library files display nothing but that would not be a big
problem if I switched back to another tab and got the image for that tab. I
don't use the tabs because of this problem. If I click on the stack trace
it often goes to a library file. Since it opened the file and I have Auto
Reload and preview ticked it it previews nothing and blanks the screen.
Then it might take minutes to get the original view back.

Multiple tabs is very handy and avoids desktop clutter.
It also make it easy to copy text from one model to another, take a peak
at someone else's model to check someting or to make a quick test based
on your current project.
Once you know about F6, the confusion around the view goes away.
Please don't make it render models automatically when you open them.
The preview is fine and rendering something "just in case" would be a
bug not a feature.
