I'm using version 2015.03-1 on Linux. When I start the GUI with a recent
file, OpenSCAD immediately starts to render a preview. Since some of the
files I'm working on take upwards of 20 minutes to render and considering
that I usually open them in OpenSCAD to continue working on them, this
forces annoying wait times on me. Is there any way to disable this
behaviour?

You can turn off "Automatic Reload and Preview"

Thank you, I actually managed to overlook that by searching only in the
preferences but not in the menu options...
