Minkowski error message

I have a product that I re-generate from an OpenSCAD script
occasionally.  This time I ended up with these messages, four times.
Interestingly, I have Stop On First Warning set.

Rendering Polygon Mesh using Manifold...

WARNING: Minkowski: Nef polyhedron converted from mesh is invalid!

WARNING: [manifold] Minkowski failed with error, falling back to Nef
operation: Minkowski: Nef polyhedron converted from mesh is invalid!

ERROR: Nef minkoswki operation failed: CGAL ERROR: assertion violation!

Expr: N.is_valid(0,0)

File:
/mxe/usr/x86_64-w64-mingw32.static.posix/include/CGAL/convex_decomposition_3.h

Line: 136

The resulting model looks fine.

Any thoughts?

Jon

After I sent this message out, I did an F6 so I could print the object.  No error messages.  I then did an F5.  No error messages.

Strange.  Perhaps unreproducable.

I get this error a lot. And like the OP for me a simple repeat of F5 or F6 and it executes without error. Most often encountered with the first preview/render of a program with minkowski calls after launch of OpenSCAD. Leads me to the assumption that there is some memory/bounds limit that is increased as the code is being processed but that the error/warning condition has already tripped. When rerunning preview or render the limiting value proceeds with the ’newly bumped’ value so it processes successfully.

> On Mar 7, 2026, at 10:39 AM, Jon Bondy via Discuss <discuss@lists.openscad.org> wrote: > > Adrian: > > I did not clear the cache prior to the problem > > Could be. i wouldn't expect that the issue is addressed just because there is no
further warning output.

import failures initially throw a warning which is not repeated on
subsequent previews or renders.

My point about clearing the cache is that if you run a model you ran
already then it can be in the cache and you won't get the same messages you
got the first time.

It appears that in this case a bunch of messages appear and yet the model
works anyway, so I would expect subsequent times the model will work
without any messages.
