Would it be difficult to allow import() of STEP files?

Can anyone recommend a converter to STL?

FreeCAD (http://freecadweb.org/) can read STEP files and export to STL.
One can also script it to do batch conversion.

Would it be difficult to allow import() of STEP files?

Probably yes, STEP is a huge beast. The way to go would likely be to integrate
the lib from http://stepcode.org/ - I did not dig deep enough to have a feeling
how much effort it would be to get at least some core features that allow to
read a reasonable amount of files.

ciao,
Torsten.

actually, i'm going in the reverse direction.

my mold maker said "we normally receive STEP files, please send us
those".  does anyone know of a way to convert STL to STEP?

is there any kind of open source 3d modeler (a la openSCAD) that uses
STEP files?

any information would be appreciated.  tia!

Hi,

FreeCAD (http://freecadweb.org/) can also output step files (and read
the CSG files exported by OpenSCAD, which allows to convert from
OpenSCAD to STEP or IGES or many other formats).

Greetings
