I woud like to add a vote for making this configurable. I'd prefer that it
remember my last saved directory instead of always displaying the
installation directory. This could be a Preferences item just like Firefox
lets you choose where to save downloaded files. It's really annoying to
have to keep navigating back to my own directory every time I export an STL.

I totally agree. I've been advocating this for a year.

Bounty's seem to get features done quicker.
But in Windows I just set the default directory (in the properties of the
shortcut that runs OpenSCAD) to my source file. I imagine there is an
equivalent in Linux.

I want my source in one [default] folder and my STLs in a different
folder, so this approach will not work.
I would prefer that the first time I save an STL, and I change the
folder, the program remember that preference, at least until I close the
program. Or, better still, forever.
This seems neither difficult nor contentious. But I have been wrong before

It messes things up for the other half of the world who keep their STL
files with the source code.

You probably won't like this, but if you make the STL folder a sub-folder of
your source, it is only one click away.

/"It messes things up for the other half of the world who keep their STL

Not if it's made a Preferences item with the current behavior the default.
There are many many other programs that work this way including Firefox
which I already mentioned, Matlab, the XnView image editor, and Corel Draw,
to name a few. What exactly is the advantage gained by the current
behavior?
Keeping your stls with the source code is fine - IF Openscad is the only 3D
CAD program you use. If not, /somebody /has to have their stl's in a
different directory. Or you end up with n different places where stls might
be and that way lies madness. Why not just offer this as an option? People
who like the way it is now wouldn't be bothered in the least.

Why not have two default folders: source and STL (or Export). Then
anyone can set them up any way they wish.

Of course there would be people who want the STL, DXF, SVG, AMF, OFF, CSG,
image files in separate directories.
Perhaps combine this need with laird's request for IDE 'build' then you
could have export trigger a script or whatever to move your file to
wherever, and do whatever post-processing you want. Or wait for the talked
about script feature.
@Whosawhatsis, I presume that is MDI mode, if you turn that off each
instance is a separate process, so that shouldn't happen.

Or provide an ExportToSTL intrinsic which would accept a path.
So many ways to slice it
