when I import the dxf file in Inkscape there are many single objects
(lines) and points.
In the svg file it is one object.

In Inkscape I used Trace Bitmap on a JPG, exported it to OpenSCAD, and
it previews OK.

I then tried exporting from Inkscape as a DXF, which I understand some
users recommend. But when I imported that into OpenSCAD I get:
"WARNING: No top level geometry to render."

linear_extrude(21)
import("C:/Users/terry/Dropbox/3D
Printer/PROJECTS/PlugCover/StartAgain/Outline2Black.dxf");

In case it helps, here's the failed DXF
https://www.dropbox.com/s/cuvsu273kg48u8t/Outline2Black.dxf?raw=1

And here's the OK SVG:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/vqyvwqon773joo2/Outline2Black.svg?raw=1

Academic, as the SVG route works fine, but I'm curious to know why DXF
fails?

Terry

Thanks dpa, those unwanted elements sound like the cause. I’ll get into it again tomorrow.

dpa:

I opened your revised DXF in OpenSCAD but the proportions seem correct
to me. (x/y = about 1.75). Do you mean it's displayed at a different
size and screen position?

If so, that's a related aspect I have yet to understand! Specifically,
to get the OpenSCAD scale markers to show the correct (physically
measured) size, is the recommended method to do that in Inkscape (or
maybe QCAD), or in OpenSCAD? And if the latter, what is the best way to
proceed please?

When I repeated opening my DXF, this time I got:
WARNING: Unsupported DXF Entity 'SPLINE' (fc) in "Outline2Black.dxf".

Opening my original DXF in Inkscape again, and zooming in, should I have
removed those remaining red marks, and if so how? Is that what you did
before saving your DXF?

P.S: Anyone know why my messages are shown from "terry pinnell - via
Discuss", instead of "Terrypin"? Probably something I've set incorrectly
since abandoning the defunct forum, but so far haven't found it!

Terry
