I have a VERY VERY LARGE SVG file I created from topographic data. I would like to create an STl from this. I have tried importing smaller SVGs into OpenSCAD in the past, but this file is just way too big. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could create an STL from this data? Either a better way to import into OpenSCAD, or other tools that could use? I can convert the image to other formats (like PNG) if that will help. Any suggestions appreciated. (I do read the email replies from the list, but may have a hard time replying back.) The data is a gray-scale topographic map in SVG format. 

Ok but what do you *mean* by this conversion? And what is 'very very large'? Just use numbers. SVG and STL are file format that represent fundamentally different things. You can do file/import in blender and then file/export as STL but I doubt that's what you're after. Since you're asking on the OpenSCAD list, presumably you want to make a 3d printable topographic map/relief? In that case how about rasterizing your SVG in QGIS and then using a plugin likr DEMto3D to create an STL from that? But I'm probably missing some processing you want to do at some point. Therefore - the conversion between mere file formats is the easy part. It's the semantics that are important. Is it that you want to create an stl, that height is represented by the grey scale? I think that is fundamentally any lithophane software will do the conversion.. If it is a question that the svg is too large a file, then you could decrease the resolution. Or you could explore the surface() facility from within OpenSCAD; it accepts a PNG. A kind of totally backwards approach would be to:  - convert to a pixel image  - import it into Carbide Create Pro as a height/depth map   - create toolpaths to cut that and write them out as G-code  - load the G-code into a tool such as CAMotics and preview it in 3D  - write out an STL from that program Or, more straight-forwardly convert to a pixel image and use a tool such as: https://imagetostl.com/create-3d-heightmap William

Since the SVG height map is grayscale, you can just: 1. Generate a PNG of the SVG. 2. Import it into OpenSCAD with `surface()`. 3.
