Possible improvements to mailing list?

I hesitate due to the circumstances that Michael mentioned. But is it
realistic to assume that resources will become available in due course?
If so perhaps it would be appropriate to start a thread on what
improvements to the list and its associated forum could be made.

Taking a positive assumption, here are two.

As previously reported, the revised forum does not consolidates threads
under a single subject. Nor does it assign posts to the correct subject
(if that's defined as the one used by the poster).

Presumably the same underlying cause, whatever that is, explains why my
email client has the same problem?

For example, both of the threads in my screenshot (differing only in
'Re:' in their headings) cover at least two other subjects: 'NopSCADlib'
and 'Screws in OpenScad'.

I'd prefer to have posted this in the forum, but until I find out how to
do so without publicising my email address I'll continue to use the
mailing list. (And I'll blind copy myself as an experiment.)

I'm not sure there's much that is under our control.

If we get Nabble back with the full feature set, we would get all
the improvements and customizations Michael made back too on the
forum side. In case that's not going to happen we will have:

  • A mailing list, all control over topics and so on is on user /
email client side only. We can only ask users to try using
"reply" when needed, but create new mails with new subjects
if appropriate (see discussion in the "Forum alternative"
    thread).

  • The "forum" / "archive" called Empathy which is software owned
and operated by EMWD https://www.emwd.com/ - I have no idea if
they take requests, but in general we have no control over that
application. It's not a full forum at this point, but at least
has some base functionality and direct integration with the
    mailing list by design.

Anything else would mean a totally different solution including
the huge and difficult effort on data migration. It might be an
option if someone finds a very good system covering both the
forum and mailing list in a nicely connected way. So far I've not
seen anything that really works well.

ciao,
Torsten.

  • The "forum" / "archive" called Empathy which is software owned

and operated by EMWD https://www.emwd.com/ - I have no idea if

they take requests,

No, the 'Empathy' enhancement to Mailman3 is provided as an add-on,

it was developed by the EMWD main proprietor, who unfortunately passed away

a little while ago. So there is little chance of changes in the near future.

With the dramatic change to Nabble, the Forum host, dropping Mailing-list integration,

it has left us where we are with what we have. Discussions with Nabble are continuing.

I, Torsten & Marius have a detailed understanding of where we are at.

We are dealing with it. It may not happen overnight, but conjecture

on rosy options without detailed knowledge of hosting and technical issues

does not help.

So please, for now, just post new emails with new subjects,

and reply 'on topic' to existing subjects, about OpenSCAD issues.

Debate about Mailing-list/Forum is not helpful at this stage.

Jon, I just read your reply. Your electricity consumption may have killed a penguin.

"Feature A in OpenSCAD" feel free to discuss.

"So, raising my voice (which I do rarely) seems necessary to me in the moment."

"the forum/email debate, which is not a new one",

everyone seems to have raised their voices,

they have raised voices in the past,

there is no reason to further shout into the void.

Everyone, save a penguin.
