Transitioning to 3MF (was 3MF and Multi-material)

I'm a few releases back from the latest build on my main Debian bookworm
laptop, I had multiple versions happily coexisting on Ubuntu as they
were AppImages, but that's a different story, so I'm missing the 3MF
export on F7.

I use 3MF files, generated by Cura, each containing heavily customised
print settings for specific parts of my machines.  When I switch printer
types Cura often trashes the critical settings.

So can I please upvote the request for being able to choose settings
from OpenSCAD, it would make a huge difference to my workflows. I know
there are hundreds of potential parameters which would be a good case
for putting them in a template, which brings me onto Templates:

And, following the recent discussion on templates, I eventually found
mine, in ~/.var/app/org.openscad.OpenSCAD/config/OpenSCAD/templates,
this is the Flatpak version, 2024.12.30.

My locally built instance, which trod all over the original Debian repo
install uses /home/rogerw/.config/OpenSCAD/templates, whatever, knowing
where to squirrel templates is going to be hugely useful.

Thank you.

FWIW If I can contribute to the print settings in any way, please drop
me an email.

and @Gene, I'm not thrilled with AppImages or Flatpak bloatware, but
I've found a 500G SSD is, er, 'sufficient', but I do keep a lot of stuff
on a QNAP NAS, with selected folders auto synch'd, I'm dreading
upgrading to Trixie, but at least the timing is my choice, not dictated
by Micro$o$t.

AppImages seem to be ok here.
I am considerably newer than the 24 issue, I'm on 2510 something. And
lack of support for the backup programs we do have is messing with my
attempts to do some much needed updating of my linuxcnc driven machines.
So I'm considering just ssh mounting the machines and using rsync to do
the backups. Some of that may bleed over to here as I ask for howto
advise. I have plenty of storage on this machine, and /home with all
this stuff is on its own 4Tb SSD drive, about 30% used but the rsync
storage I have in mind lives as an 11Tb raid6 on a pi clone.  That's all
setup, what to do to make the rsync runs conditional is the question
I'll likely need help with.

Thank you.

Hi I have been updating the documentation about how OpenSCAD uses paths to find its resources and to save user files. I can do my own research on Mac OS and WIndows but i only have a WSL Version of Ubuntu and i have not been able to get OpenSCAD running on it so far But .. if anyone running it on a Posix / Linus machine could capture the output of the menu Help > Library Info page and send it to me i will be able to complete the project with a semblance of confidence that my new doc version is saying correct things thanks all -- jeff is vulcan_ in the cloud On Oct. 21, 2025, at 3:46 p.m., gene heskett via Discuss discuss@lists.openscad.org wrote: On 10/21/25 07:50, Roger Whiteley via Discuss wrote: I'm a few releases back from the latest build on my main Debian bookworm laptop, I had multiple versions happily coexisting on Ubuntu as they were AppImages, but that's a different story, so I'm missing the 3MF export on F7.

I also got openscad compiled in LinuxMint inside a VirtualBox.
Does this create output which is useful for you ?
